Interested in taking drums lessons in St Albans?

Hi! I’m Chris Heyes.

I’m an experienced drum teacher based in St Albans, Hertfordshire, and I teach everyone from the complete beginner up to advanced players.

Whether you want to learn the drums just for fun, or aspire to be the next big thing, I can help! I believe that rhythm is one of our most fundamental natural instincts, and that everyone has the potential to become a great drummer.

I have recently completed a custom-built soundproofed studio in the garden of my home in St Albans AL4, near Highfield Park. Having a dedicated space for two drum kits creates an ideal teaching environment, where I can demonstrate techniques, and we can play together.

*COVID-19 Information*

I am currently back to teaching drums in person. Mask wearing is down to the student’s preference, and there’s a hand sanitiser machine in the studio. Luckily, having two separate drum kits in the studio makes social distancing easy, and the room is also fully ventilated with a powered air system. Teaching remotely over Zoom remains an option too. Please get in touch if you have any other questions or concerns.

Here are some of the topics we could cover in our lessons:

Hemel drum lessons with Chris Pusey-4

– Reading music and other music theory

– Playing in different styles, e.g. pop, rock and jazz

– Timekeeping and playing to a click track

– Drumstick / brushes / foot techniques

– Co-ordination and limb interdependence

– Recording live music in a studio

– Composing new grooves and drum parts for songs

Don’t worry if any of that sounds intimidating! We can cover any or all of the above, and build up your knowledge bit by bit in manageable chunks at a pace that suits you. I pride myself in teaching in a relaxed and accessible way, and can mould your lesson content towards whatever it is that you want to achieve.

If you’re interested in taking exams, I can help you work through them, all the way from Grade 1 to 8. My previous students have had a 100% pass rate – mostly merits and distinctions.

***Update December 2023***

All my after school slots are now fully booked. I currently only have limited availability early afternoon on Mondays and Tuesdays.

If you’d like to be added to my waiting list, please send me an email and I’ll get back to you when something opens up. It’s worth me saying I’ve currently got 25 names on the list – but if/when a slot opens up it may not be suitable for some people on the list, so you never know!
