Interested in taking drums lessons in St Albans?
Hi! I’m Chris Heyes.
I’m an experienced drum teacher based in St Albans, Hertfordshire, and I teach everyone from the complete beginner up to advanced players.
Whether you want to learn the drums just for fun, or aspire to be the next big thing, I can help! I believe that rhythm is one of our most fundamental natural instincts, and that everyone has the potential to become a great drummer.
I have recently completed a custom-built soundproofed studio in the garden of my home in St Albans AL4, near Highfield Park. Having a dedicated space for two drum kits creates an ideal teaching environment, where I can demonstrate techniques, and we can play together.
I am taking all appropriate precautions this year, due to COVID-19. During lockdown, all drum lessons will be taken via Zoom – all you need to have at home is a laptop and a drum kit or a practice pad to drum on. When lessons are able to resume in person, I will be taking precautions such as mask wearing, hand sanitising, etc. Luckily, having two separate drum kits in the studio makes social distancing easy, and the room is also fully ventilated with a powered air system. Please get in touch if you have any other questions or concerns.
Here are some of the topics we could cover in our lessons:
– Reading music and other music theory
– Playing in different styles, e.g. pop, rock and jazz
– Timekeeping and playing to a click track
– Drumstick / brushes / foot techniques
– Co-ordination and limb interdependence
– Recording live music in a studio
– Composing new grooves and drum parts for songs
Don’t worry if any of that sounds intimidating! We can cover any or all of the above, and build up your knowledge bit by bit in manageable chunks at a pace that suits you. I pride myself in teaching in a relaxed and accessible way, and can mould your lesson content towards whatever it is that you want to achieve.
If you’re interested in taking exams, I can help you work through them, all the way from Grade 1 to 8. My previous students have had a 100% pass rate – mostly merits and distinctions.
